Michele Gayles became Phoenix Union High School District Assistant Superintendent for Operations in July of 2014. Among her duties, she oversees information technology, data and research, and plant operations, which includes facilities, utilities and transportation. She came from the Valley of the Sun United Way where she was Vice President of Community Impact for the Valley of the Sun United Way. She joined the United Way in 2006. Gayles had served in the health and human services sector for nearly 20 years, managing operations, innovation and technology, and strategic planning. Gayles is no stranger to education in Phoenix, working on several education-related projects such as Degree Phoenix, Destination Graduation, Arizona College Access Network, College Depot, Arizona Ready High School Graduation Task Force, Arizona’s First Things First and Thriving Together. These initiatives focus on student academic success, youth readiness for post-secondary education and career. She has managed numerous local and state efforts to improve outcomes for children and families. Gayles was the General Business Manager for Sunfire African Art Gallery in Phoenix, and spent 11 years with credit card company MBNA America in Ohio in community relations and training and development. She holds a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Organizations from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and General Business from Miami (of Ohio) University. A resident of Phoenix, Gayles has one son, who graduated from Phoenix Union’s Bioscience High School.
